Does Instagram Tell You Who Screenshots Your Posts or Story?

Updated June 2026

The fear is universal: you screenshot someone's story and panic that they got an alert. Good news — for almost everything on Instagram, screenshots are silent. There's one narrow exception. Here's the full picture.

The short answer

For regular posts, stories, reels, and profiles, Instagram does not notify the other person when you screenshot. Screenshot away — they won't know.

The one exception

Disappearing photos and videos sent in a DM (the "view once" / vanish-mode media) do trigger a screenshot notification to the sender. Normal text DMs and saved photos in chat don't. So the only place to be careful is one-time-view media in direct messages.

What Instagram never notifies

  • Screenshots of feed posts and reels.
  • Screenshots of stories (this changed years ago — no alerts now).
  • Screenshots of someone's profile or highlights.
  • Screen recordings of most content.
  • Viewing or screenshotting a profile — Instagram doesn't track profile views at all (more in can you see who viewed your profile?).

Why people still worry

Other apps (Snapchat) do alert on story screenshots, so the assumption bleeds over. And "screenshot notification" apps for Instagram are mostly fake — another reason to ignore tools that claim to track things Instagram simply doesn't expose.

Curious what Instagram does let you see?

You can't see screenshotters or profile viewers, but you can see who follows you and who doesn't. UnfollowScan compares your own followers and following lists in your browser (no login) to show who doesn't follow you back — the real, do-able version of all that curiosity.
