How Often Does Instagram Update Your Follower Count?

You gain a follower and the number doesn't move. Or it drops by 20 overnight for no reason. Instagram's follower count isn't broken — it just doesn't update the way most people assume. Here's what's really going on.

The short version

Follower counts usually update in near-real-time for small changes, but Instagram caches the number and recounts periodically, so big or rapid changes can lag by minutes to hours. On large accounts the lag is more noticeable.

Why it lags or jumps

• Caching: the displayed number is a stored snapshot, refreshed on a delay, not a live tally.
• Bot purges: Instagram periodically deletes fake accounts in bulk, so you can lose a chunk at once.
• Deactivations: when followers deactivate or get banned, your count drops without anyone unfollowing.
• Sync delay: the app and the web sometimes show slightly different numbers until they catch up.

How to get an accurate read

1. Pull to refresh, or check from a browser as well as the app.
2. Wait a few hours before trusting a sudden drop — caching often "corrects" it.
