Can You Hide Your Following List on Instagram?

Updated June 2026

Maybe you don't want everyone seeing who you follow. It's a fair instinct โ€” but Instagram only gives you partial control here. Here's exactly what you can and can't hide.

The honest answer

On a public account, anyone can see your following and followers lists. There's no toggle to hide them. On a private account, only your approved followers can see those lists โ€” everyone else is locked out. So "hiding" your following list really means going private.

What going private hides

  • Your following and followers lists โ€” approved followers only.
  • Your posts, reels, and stories โ€” approved followers only.

What stays visible even when private

  • Your follower and following counts (the numbers).
  • Your username, profile photo, and bio.

So the numbers show, but the actual lists don't. More on this in our guide to private account visibility.

Workarounds people try

  • Go private โ€” the only real way to hide the lists from non-followers.
  • Prune who you follow โ€” fewer accounts, less to see. Some people trim their list before any big follow.
  • A separate "main" vs "lurker" account โ€” follow privately from a second account.

Tidy the list while you're at it

If you're cleaning up who you follow anyway, start with the accounts that don't follow you back โ€” they're the easy cut. UnfollowScan finds them from your own export (no login, browser-only), and our safe mass-unfollow guide shows how to trim without getting action-blocked.
