How to Tell if Someone Blocked You on Instagram

When someone's profile suddenly seems to vanish, it's easy to assume the worst. But "blocked," "unfollowed," and "deactivated account" all look a little different — and Instagram never sends a notification for any of them. Here's how to read the signs.

The clearest test

Search for the person's username from your account. Then check from a different account (or ask a friend). If their profile is invisible to you but visible to everyone else, you've likely been blocked. If it's gone for everyone, they probably deactivated or deleted the account.

Signs you've been blocked

• Their profile shows "User not found" or "No posts yet" with a zero count to you, but works on another account.
• You can't find them in search, but a friend can.
• Your old DM thread stays, but their name is no longer tappable / shows "Instagrammer."
• You can't see their posts, stories, or comments anywhere.

Blocked vs unfollowed vs deactivated

• Unfollowed: their profile still loads fine — they just don't follow you. No drama, no block.
• Blocked: their profile is invisible to you specifically.
• Deactivated/deleted: the profile is gone for everyone, not just you.

That last one trips people up constantly — a deactivated account looks a lot like a block.

One thing blocking always does

Blocking forces an unfollow on both sides. So if you're auditing who dropped you, remember a "non-follower" might be someone who blocked you, or just a deactivated account — not necessarily a deliberate unfollow.
