How to Switch to an Instagram Professional Account (and Should You?)
Updated June 2026
A Professional account is free and unlocks Instagram's analytics, which is reason enough for most people who care about growth. There are two flavors โ Creator and Business โ and a couple of small trade-offs worth knowing before you flip the switch.
How to switch (under a minute)
- Profile โ menu (โฐ) โ Settings and activity.
- Find Account type and tools โ Switch to professional account.
- Pick a category, then choose Creator or Business.
- Done โ you can switch back or between types anytime.
Creator vs Business
- Creator: built for influencers and public figures โ flexible contact options, creator-focused insights, access to more music. Best if you're a personal brand.
- Business: built for brands and shops โ contact buttons, Instagram Shopping, and scheduling via tools. Best if you sell or run a company page.
What you unlock
- Insights: reach, impressions, follower activity times, audience demographics.
- Contact buttons and category labels on your profile.
- Promoted posts / ads if you want them.
The small trade-offs
Some people claim Professional accounts get slightly less organic reach (unconfirmed by Instagram), and a Business account can't set itself to private. For most growth-minded users, the analytics far outweigh these. If reach feels off after switching, it's usually the normal causes โ see why followers don't see your posts.
Use the data, then act
Insights tell you when your audience is active (great for timing) and how engaged they are. If the engagement looks low for your follower count, you likely have dead weight โ find non-followers and clean up with UnfollowScan (no login, in your browser).
