Instagram Notes, Explained: What They Are and Who Sees Them

Notes are the little text bubbles that float above your inbox at the top of Direct Messages. Think of them as a status line: a short thought, a mood, a song — visible for 24 hours, then gone. Small feature, surprisingly good for staying on people's radar.

What a Note actually is

A Note is up to 60 characters of text (you can add music or a mention) that appears as a bubble above your profile photo in other people's DM lists. It disappears after 24 hours, like a story — but it lives in the inbox, not the feed.

Who can see your Note?

You choose one of two audiences when posting:

• Followers you follow back (i.e., your mutuals), or
• Close Friends only (your Close Friends list).

So only mutuals or close friends ever see it — never the general public.

How to post one

1. Open your DMs (the inbox).
2. Tap your profile photo with "Leave a note" at the top.
3. Type up to 60 characters, choose the audience, and share.

Why Notes are quietly useful

They sit at the very top of the inbox — prime attention real estate — and they invite replies, which land as DMs and build real conversations. For small accounts, that direct interaction beats chasing feed reach.
