Restrict vs Block on Instagram: Which Should You Use?
Updated June 2026
When someone’s bothering you on Instagram, blocking isn’t your only option — and it’s often not the best one. Restrict, mute, and remove each handle the situation more quietly. Here’s how they differ.
Block
The nuclear option. A blocked person can’t find your profile, see your posts, or message you, and you both unfollow each other automatically. They aren’t notified, but it’s obvious if they go looking — your profile vanishes. Use it when you want someone gone completely.
Restrict
The subtle one, built for awkward situations like a coworker or relative. When you restrict someone:
- Their comments on your posts are hidden from everyone but them (you can approve them or not).
- Their DMs move to your message requests — no notification to you.
- They can’t see when you’re online or whether you read their messages.
They have no idea they’ve been restricted. Perfect for de-escalating without drama.
Mute
Pure feed management. Muting hides someone’s posts or stories from you while you stay following them. They’re never notified, and nothing changes on their end. Use it when you don’t want to see the content but don’t want to unfollow.
Remove follower
A quiet middle ground. Removing a follower drops them from your audience without blocking — they can still find and re-follow you, but they’re notified of nothing. Great for cleaning up your follower list. More on that in our ghost followers guide.
Quick comparison
- Want them gone entirely? Block.
- Want to limit them quietly? Restrict.
- Just tired of their posts? Mute.
- Want them out of your followers? Remove.
