What Does the Green Dot Mean on Instagram?

See a little green dot on someone's profile photo in your DMs and you might wonder what it's telling you. It's simple: that person is active on Instagram right now (or was, very recently). Here's the full story — including how to hide your own.

What it means

The green dot is the activity status indicator. It shows on a profile picture in your inbox and chat threads when that person is currently online or was active in the last few minutes. It's Instagram's version of "online now."

Who can see your green dot?

Only people you have a connection with:

• Accounts you follow and that follow you (mutuals), and
• People you've DM'd.

Strangers and non-mutuals don't see your activity status. And it's a two-way street — if you hide yours, you can't see anyone else's either.

How to turn it off

1. Go to Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Activity status (path names shift slightly by version).
2. Toggle Show activity status off.

Now no one sees your green dot — but you lose the ability to see theirs too. Fair trade for privacy.

Green dot vs the green ring

Don't confuse them: the green dot means "active now," while a green ring around a story means it was shared to Close Friends. Different features entirely.
