Free Instagram Analytics: What to Track (No Paid Tools Needed)

You don't need a paid dashboard to understand your account. Instagram's built-in Insights — free with a Professional account — covers almost everything that matters. The trick is knowing which numbers to watch and which to ignore.

Turn on free analytics first

Insights only appear on Creator or Business accounts. Switching is free and reversible — see how to switch to a Professional account. Once on, tap "Insights" on your profile or any post.

The metrics worth tracking

• Reach (esp. from non-followers) — your growth signal. More in reach vs impressions.
• Engagement rate — likes + comments + saves relative to reach (how to calculate it).
• Saves and shares — the strongest "this was valuable" signals, and Explore fuel.
• Follower active times — when to post (timing guide).
• Top posts — what to make more of.

What to mostly ignore

• Follower count alone — vanity without engagement behind it.
• Likes in isolation — saves and shares tell you more.

Turn numbers into decisions

1. Find your top 3 posts by saves/shares → make more like them.
2. Post just before your peak active time.
3. If engagement rate is low for your size, you have dead weight to trim.

The one thing Insights won't show
