How to Tell if Someone Restricted You on Instagram

Updated June 2026

Restrict is Instagram's quiet tool for limiting someone without the drama of a block. The whole point is that the restricted person can't easily tell. Still, a few clues leak through if you know where to look.

What restrict actually does

When someone restricts you, your comments on their posts only show to you (until they approve them), your DMs land in their message requests, and you can't see when they're online or whether they've read your messages. They still appear normal to you — that's the trick.

Subtle signs you've been restricted

  • Your comments vanish for others. Comment on their post, then check from another account — if it's missing there but visible to you, that's a restrict tell.
  • No "Active" status or read receipts. You used to see when they were online or that they read your DM, and now you never do.
  • Your DMs seem ignored. Messages may be sitting in their requests folder, unseen.

Restrict vs block

  • Restricted: you can still see their profile, posts, and stories normally — just limited interaction.
  • Blocked: their profile becomes invisible to you entirely (see how to tell if you're blocked).

If you can still view everything but interactions feel one-sided, it's restrict, not block.

The bigger relationship picture

Restrict and block are about how others treat your account. If you're more curious about who follows you back in the first place, that's a cleaner question — UnfollowScan compares your own followers and following lists (no login, in your browser) to show who doesn't reciprocate.
